Affliction: Zombie Rising Review

Affliction
5 Overall Score
Gameplay: 5/10
Graphics: 7/10
Controls: 6/10

Great graphics | Scaring sound

Not much content | No alternative controls | Better guns have to be unlocked with real money

There are many zombie shooter games in the App Store, but Affliction: Zombie Rising promises to be an extraordinary one.

The first thing you do in this game is choosing one of four weapons: The two bad ones are available for free, and the two good ones have to be bought via In-App Purchases – a pistol for $1 and a machine gun for $5. After a short instruction, you can start playing.

The controls are very simple: You look around using the gyroscope of your iDevice and you shoot by pressing the button on the bottom right of your screen. Moving is not possible in this game. Reloading can be done by holding the device to the floor and swiping down with one finger. There’s only one single player game mode: The endless game mode which is divided into waves of zombies. The co-op multiplayer via Game Center is basically the same as the single player mode, the only difference is that two players play at once – but you can’t even see the other player.

I really like the gameplay, the good graphics and the scaring sound, but there’s a long list of negative points about this game.

I definitely have expected much more from this game.

The most annoying thing is the necessity of buying a good gun for $1 or $5 – just for surviving a few waves and not having to reload after every zombie. I think it’s okay that the good guns aren’t available at the beginning, but at least there should be the possibility to unlock them for free after playing for a while, for example with coins earned during the game! And $5 is definitely too much money for an IAP like this one. Furthermore there’s no pause menu, no alternative control model and just one game mode. And as you can only use the gyroscope controls, there’s no chance to play this game on the go.

I definitely have expected much more from this game. Graphics and sound are cool, but I could find so many negative points that I cannot recommend the purchase.
